Memorial Trail Run Xtreme ------Run it-------or help us run it!! - Sunday, May 13, 2012
The Trail Run Xtreme 12K Trail Run is coming Memorial Day morning, in just two weeks! While you might have missed the early deadline, there is still plenty of time to sign up so you too can participate. Don't miss your chance to get muddy and wet while challenging your running skills in a way that most races cannot. There will be bug spray provided before and food, fruit and snacks afterward, and camaraderie all around. See you on 5/28 at Imagination Glen (the east side) in Portage! With a 9:00A start you'll still have plenty of time on the holiday to tell your friends how much fun you had on the beautiful hills of the Outback Trail. Sign up today at www.thtiming.com

Or.....if you're not up for the run....come out and help the OTC as course marshalls, stream-crossing-guards, waler-stop commanders, sweep cyclists, parking lot attendants.......its a whole bunch of fun to watch these athletes on the hills!  Thanks!

Trail Maintenance - April 21st 8AM - West Lot - Thursday, April 19, 2012
Saturday April 21st 8AM.

Big thanks go out to the volunteers on April 21st.  Richard Cunanan, JD Donlin, Bob Barr, and Ryan Stacklin and WT Smith for putting in a cumulative 20 hours of work.

We installed some posts for a guard-rail in shelter skelter.  Put in some new beginner level benchcut there as well.  Then we moved over to Bobol Ridge where we put in a new bypass trail and started the process on de-cupping trail (re-establishing a 5-7% outslope).

The next scheduled trail maintenance is Sunday May 19th.  But check back, I may be out Sunday May 6th.  If you have any time, we're trying to establish small work crews to jobs such as weed whipping, tree pruning and weed whipping.  Email wallace.william18@yahoo.com if you have some free time you'd like to devote to trail maintenance.  Email wtsmith@outbacktrail.org if you have some time on May 6th.

Next Trail Maintenance Saturday April 21st, 8AM, Check back for updates - Wednesday, April 04, 2012
Big kudos to everyone who showed up last Sunday, April 1st.  Due to the number of volunteers we were able to put in a fall line reroute in a single morning.  Keith Duvall (Treasurer) and Mike Kehle (Secretary) were also able to sign the entire Front Side thanks to great planning and terrific new signs that install in minutes.  Plus they bend and don't break.

The next trail maintenance day is Saturday, April 21st.  Depending on funding and personnel availability we will be doing boardwalking, tidying up the Front Side, and a few reroutes on the Dark Side.  We also have to do a lot of maintenance this Spring on existing bench cut in order to preserve it and redirect water over the side of the trail instead of down it.

Our immediate goal is to have a complete Beginner Loop done (just a few finishing touches left and some boardwalking) by June 23rd when we will have a grand opening "Learn To Ride a Moutain Bike" event (see EVENTS page) to attract new folks to the sport. The ultimate goal and theme for this season is increasing trail uptime. The method is to reduce erosion and water bearing depressions through contour trail alternatives and armoring.

There is MUCH, MUCH more work to be done. For those concerned with the work focus thus far.....no worry... I guarantee that "cool" is a consideration, and is coming.  The beginner loop is almost squared away.  It's time to start enhancing the Dark Side.  Stay tuned for "cool"!!
