TRAIL OPEN:  Ride with the Arrows for 1 Way Traffic

The trail is just dry enough to  ride normal direction, but there is some debris on the ground.  Take the time to hike the trail, kick off the crap, then ride it.  There is still MUD on the fronstide and FAR CREEK - avoid those areas, jump up on the higher ground.  .  There is a new tree down on the long downhill near the trucking company in the eastside dark side. This tree is at head level on a fast section so USE CAUTION.

The Front Side is muddy:  Creek bottoms are very wet.

The Dark Side REGULAR route  is OPEN:

Far Creek = OPEN, .

Trailer Run tacky mud sections is OPEN:

Basement is muddy  with some minor standing water:   You can ride abound most of it, but I short cut it.

With warmer weather you may have noticed some new riding partners on the trails ... with wings.  It's not only mosquitos, but biting flies as well that can bleed you dry.  Lets take some time to review recommendations for protection from an expert, the Department of Defense.

1) On exposed skin, use deet, no specifically use Ultrathon Cream (33% Deet).  It's a formulation that doesn't wash off, prevents skin absorbtion and is time released.  One application can last 12 hours.

2) Treat clothes with a permethrin spray.  It permeates the fabric and can last multiple washings.

3) Keep a headnet handy in case things get really swarmy.  The Deet may prevent a mosquito from biting your eyeball, but it won't stop a hundred from hovering within an inch of your face and it's very hard to change flats with hundreds of mosquitos so close to you.

You can find an excellent selection of these products at the local outdoor stores (you know the ones I'm talking about).  You can also find aerosol Ultrathon there which would be the one insect repellant to choose if you could only choose one.

Ride
Organizing a dark side night ride for the First Friday in August.

Gather at 8pm in the west side gravel lot with your lights.

If your new to night riding, please get bright lights. The Bell lights from WalMart are not quite bright enough to be used safely on the trail.

Learn

All, please refrain from "checking" the closed sections to see if they are ready to ride.  That just puts more riders in areas that are too senstive to ride.

Further, what many casual riders consider "ready to ride" we recognize as "only good for a few riders".  In other words, the first 4-5 guys who go through may be OK.  After that it get progressively worse as you drive the moisture deeper into the soil.   Then it takes longer for the trail to recover.

Helping is showing up to trail maintenance days.  Helping is joining the group or making donations.  We've been doing this for a while and we'd really appreciate if everyone would not go into closed sections.  We close them for reasons.  And until you have to repaired a section once it's been permanently reduced to a mud hole, you're probably not the best person to make the call on whether a section should be open or closed..

So please, respect the trail closed signs and stay out of areas that have been taped off.   We want to ride them just as much as you.  We have ways of knowing when to check, and then ... we do.  And if it's ready to open, we open it.

Thank You.

Learn, Respect

We all use bicycles as a tool for recreation.  But every once in a while we need to be reminded of the that the bicycle is the transportation vehicle for every man as it requires no fuel except what we put in our mouths.  In some nations, access to a bicycle (even those things they sell at Wal-Mart) can be a life changing experience facilitates economic mobility for those who can afford them.  Check out this article at http://cnn.com about Pedals For Progress.

Learn, Ride

One of the most important aspects of cycling is your pedalling technique.  An efficient technique can add a significant amount of power to your pedaling.  I found this excellent article discussing the different pedaling techniques.  It's a great thing to practice on a stationary bike in preparation for spring.

 Join Outback Trail Minimize

Thank You for visiting OutbackTrail.org.  If you're reading this page you probably ride the trail.  Since the Outback Trail is in a city park, many people assume it's taxpayer supported facility.  In truth, while the city provides invaluable assistance by allowing us to use public land, the trail is almost entirely financed, created, and maintained and by volunteer efforts orgainzed by the Outback Trail Commision.

Because we are an independent organization, we have to pay liability insurance just to maintain this trail.  In the past year, our insurance costs have doubled and this has put significant strain on our budget.  While a few individuals have been donating money to support the trail and pay the insurance, hundreds ride the trail without contributing.  Since the insurance is doubling, member dues on our small group will not come near to paying the annual insurance.  And this does not take into account other costs such as building supplies, tool purchase/maintenance and administrative costs such webhosting.

So, we are asking anyone who uses the trail on a regular basis to join the Outback Trail Commission.  Consider the considerable investment you put into your bicycle and other cycling equipment.  Now imagine their value if you had no trail to ride it on.  With your membership fee, you can help us maintain and upgrade the trail as well as providing a sense of pride that you are contributing instead of just riding.

You can download the membership form in PDF format by by clicking here.  We greatly appreciate $20 membership fee and any other donation you would make.  Become a trail builder today!!
